Daily Life of a Design Student

halo!

maybe some of you ever wondering what a design student like me learn in our college. many people think what we do is just something's easy just like 'drawing' or maybe 'doodling'. some (most) of my friends said this to me, "ah you guys are just drawing and painting, looks like me in kindergarden haha"

ok, maybe You did say that. i'm not gonna say what you say is wrong. 80 or maybe 90% of what we do everyday is drawing and painting. but it's not just 'drawing' something. we learn that because it's the basic important thing in a designer life. and painting, most of my friends say, "it's easy right? you just paint something and get score."

this is why i'm trying to explain.

i'm a Design Student in Binus University. now i'm in the second semester.

let me show you what exactly we do everyday.

in the first semester, i get the most basic lessons in visual design. i get Western Art History, Eastern Art History, Drawing I, Color Theory, and Nirmana Datar.

i'm gonna explain it one by one with some of my works.

in Western and Eastern Art History, ofcourse, we learn about History of Art, the basic of art from the very beginning.

in Drawing I, we start drawing from the very basic one. like lines, basic shapes, shadows, perspective and human figure

it's very important, because it makes us used to draw with logic as what we see in actual vision.

Color Theory. this one for me, is the very most important lesson. we learn about color and paint. we get to know how to mix color and know the characteristic of every colors. so we're not just use some color and paint it in a paper. we have to feel and know that the color we use, is right.

these are some of our work from the first one.

Nirmana Datar. most my friends don't get what it's all about. me too actually, when i first heard it i didn't know what it is. so Nirmana Datar is the very basic lesson in Design. in Nirmana Datar, we learn about basic shape, dots, lines, and all the basic things in Design. it's like the "root" of Design.

this one for me is the special one. this is my final work (Music Visualization Project). i'm doing Heavy Metal Lover by Lady Gaga, and i get 100 :D

that's all in my first semester.

now i'm in second semester, i get Computer Graphics, Photography, Visual Communication Design, Drawing II, and Typhography. sounds more complicated? HELL YES

in ComGraph, we step up designing in Computer using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.

this is my first work using Adobe Illustrator. i know it's not so good:| cause i never used Ai before hahaha

in Photography, i think i don't even need to explain about this one. we learn about how to use our digital camera and have a good shot.

Visual Communication Design, it's like the mixture of Nirmana Datar and Color Theory. so it's the most basic lesson tho.

in Drawing II, yeah we still drawing things, mostly about human figure and real perspective objects.

Typhography. this one for me is the most difficult one so far. in design, we usually use words, so it's important to learn about the characteristic of every kind of words. in this semester, we draw words manually. killing? yep T_T

SO! that's all(so far) about What We Do in our daily life. i hope all of you now get how it feels like being a young designer and won't get the wrong thoughts or even underestimate our work compare to yours :)

i have to say, even it's hard and very tiring, i love what i do. and as long as i'm enjoying working with all these stuffs, painting and drawing till 3am, it doesn't feel like wasting my time and even relieve my problems. so the point is, you have to love what you do :)
